External screen disconnecting every 4 minutes with usb-c to hdmi connection

I have a dell xps 13 which is running ubuntu 20.04 and is connected to an external screen via an usb-c to hdmi cable.

This worked fine for a year and now it has started to randomly disconnect every 5 minutes. Separately a couple of months ago it started behaving weirdly, when I plug it into all other ports other than one specific one where it works fine, the screen flickers continuously. This could be a cable issue but I have no other cable to test that atm. Does anyone have any suggestions?
